Hello from NYC, it’s the NYC marathon this weekend!

My friends and I live around Mile 18 of the route and we always go down to cheer the runners on. Last year we discussed that we should offer something beyond cheers and shouts.

One of my friends was thinking about pooling our money together and buying some snacks and cookies and just having a big “snacks for runners” sign. Would this work? Would this be helpful? What kind of snacks work best? (ideally something available at Costco)

None of us are runners beyond the occasional turkey trot so we have no idea. So turning to r/running hoping for some feedback before we buy $500 of snacks that nobody wants.

Tiny cups of flat coke. Someone handed them out at mile 20 when I ran NYC years ago and it was amazing. That or gummy bears.

My first marathon I texted my friends around mile 10 that I needed a McDonald’s sprite or else I would combust. I had a McDonald’s sprite waiting for me at mile 17 🫡

Mountain Dew is a fave among trail runners so maybe a couple options?!

Personally, I prefer not TOO cold because it’s kind of shocking.

my first LA Marathon in 2015 it was blazing hot (probably close to 90F on the course by the time I reached the finish-line) and someone on mile 23 was handing out small cups filled with coca cola that was so cold that it was slushee. It was fricking amazing.

During my first marathon I approached an aid station at mile… 19…? and saw a can of coca cola on the table. I nabbed it, cracked it open and chugged it, wide-eyed like a 3 year old trying to down as much sugar as they can before mom and dad catch them. That’s when I heard one of the volunteers meekly say “hey that was mine…”

      Sorry pal :-(
