including most stuff that makes up smelly garbage… I never understood this “you are special because you are stardust” take, most things are made of “stardust”

Because it represents a connectedness to everything that surrounds us. Everything around us, including us, is nothing but stardust and that’s what it’ll eventually become again. It’s not ‘you’re special because we are unique in that’ - it’s :’ you’re part of something that is unfathomable bigger than you are and that is special’. And that includes, among many other things, smelly garbage.

if the fact we look alike (as humans) have not provided enough of this togetherness to overcome racism, I doubt an abstract notion, that will completely fly over the heads of precisely the people that need it most, will do anything

While I partially agree with your sentiment, I am nonetheless a little confused why we’re trying to solve racism here all of sudden.

I just see it as a beautiful little metaphor for life. Sometimes things don’t have to serve a bigger purpose than just being beautiful.

It’s a humbling thought, we are but stardust and that’s what we, and everything else will eventually become again.

And it’s not even something esoteric or magical, it’s just the physics of the Universe as we understand them.

I just assumed that was the case with the whole “togetherness” comment. If it’s just some cutesy pleasantry, then it’s not even worth discussing

Half of me says this is exactly how I feel about astrology so who the hell am I to feel miffed that you are dismissing that because I too dismiss something as not serious enough, “not even worth discussing.” But on the other hand, given how negative the Fediverse can be, I’m going to keep posting my cutesy pleasantries. Want to help the FOSS alternative to Reddit have activity, and this one is related enough to blood donation that I think I, single mod hoping others will post here, can put it here to have some level of activity.

Also, the negativity that shows up so frequently on the Threadiverse is part of what made me severely cut back participation. I don’t think I’m the only one discouraged from participating by that and so I figured I should try to at least contribute to the solution by posting the opposite of negativity, instead of just complaining about it.

It’s not only that they were dismissing cutesy pleasantries, they were trying at every turn to be the turd in the punch bowl. “We are made from stars” - “yeah, so is smelly garbage” - " that’s still beautiful" - “yeah but it doesn’t solve racism!” - “things don’t have to have a bigger purpose to be enjoyed” - " well that’s just trivial nonsense". Insufferable prickishness.

That’s what makes me participate less and less in these spaces, because there’s always some asshole trying to make everybody else just as miserable as they themselves are. It’s fine if you don’t share the perspective, but there’s no need to be a dick about it.

Anyway, thanks for trying, I enjoyed engaging with those thoughts :)

Kind of forgot about that, to be honest. People are going to selectively remember what makes them feel good, but it is good to be reminded of the actual facts too.
