The slowpokes that finish the marathon still ran a marathon just as much as the top 10. I understand it’s different if you took 8+ hours and walked the entire thing, but the ones who took 5-6 hours and jogged, I’d still call them marathon runners.
This shouldn’t be a hot take but unfortunately is.
What the people that run between 3-4 hour marathons don’t want to admit is that they are hobby runners just like the 5-8 hour people. If you paid to run the marathon, or are not an elite sponsored athlete, who gives a fuck what your pace is. Run a marathon because YOU want to and because you want to challenge yourself. Or walk it and have fun. It’s for you and you alone. Idk why people get so gatekeepy about others paces.
Honestly, you’re right. And I apologize about the 8 hour remark. Even I’m being subconsciously gatekeepy.
But yeah, I’m one of the 4-5 hour runners. Just trying to enjoy the day and finish the damn thing.
This comment was sort of in response to a video from the NYC marathon where some people were commenting that it didn’t count because people are walking across the finish line/took too long. Which is dumb, they still did it, just their own way. Obviously they’re not trying to compete/qualify!

6 hours for 42 km is definitely not jogging, that person walked for a fair bit.
