Happy Friday runners!!

What’s good this weekend? Who’s turkey trotting, recovering from their holiday feast, buying Black Friday runner deals, wondering what all these Americans are on about, …? Tell us all about it!

This weekend should be a ton of fun. I have to work today so I am just phoning it in at work. It’s still work if you’re parked in front of the computer right? And WFH means it still counts if you’re in your undies right? I might go to the gym and try to lift some heavy things afterwards and I need to clean out the car for tomorrow. Tomorrow the girlfriend and I are going on a day trip and taking her kid to a science museum about 3 hrs away. So we will get to spend all day together including 6 hrs in a car which should be a lot of fun. We will find out how much we really love each other I guess. Even odds that one of us makes the other one walk home.

Trying to get my mileage back up after a hip injury - I seem to get blasted to zero every time. I ran 6.5 miles last Friday, but my shorter runs since have been garbage. I’m trying not to get too frustrated, but it’s difficult.

Sorry for being late to post this! This weekend I will continue trying to get the internet at my new house to work :/ Trying to make Verizon 5g home internet a thing here and it is reluctant. So it’s a little tough doing so much on my phone over cellular data! Plus tonight’s a new bake off, I don’t want to miss it! (And I have to work on Monday and can’t do that without internet)

Otherwise I will be moving the last few things from my apartment, cleaning it, and ordering some house things. Need new light fixtures in a few places, bathroom stuff, maybe a little rug or two, … I also need new running shoes but I’m not sure it’s on the agenda for this weekends shopping.

I’ve got a few runs in with my new watch and I’m still working on getting it set up right, something funny is going on with the background maps, it’s not lining up quite correctly and currently only showing major routes, also I want to figure out how to turn off the beeps on directions.

Ahh I see. You should be able to use something like a nail file to just slide the mechanism over, usually they still work the same, just without the little latch bit. I just realized my Garmin Forerunner is like that.

This guy uses a knife, but I recommend using something like a nail file, like I said (or if you have to, use a dull knife):

The learning curve of those fancy new watches seems steep but you seem very techy so I have faith you’ll figure it out!

What I would LIKE to do this weekend is just lie around the house - I cooked my first full Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and I am exhausted (everything turned out great and I’m so proud but so tired). However, I need to go to the grocery store (why do these people keep wanting to eat??) and, Lord save me, fucking Costco. Maybe tomorrow will be time to lie around the house? Maybe put up the Christmas tree? I’m hoping to get a few chilly miles in tomorrow morning - there’s a specific route in my neighborhood that I’ve wanted to run for a while and haven’t gotten around to yet. Happy (hopefully) long weekend to my fellow Americans! I will never cease to be grateful that my workplace is always closed on Black Friday.

I mean, there’s that, but they want to drink milk too! It’s just unfair. I did decide that the boneless skinless chicken sale at Costco was absolutely not worth going there, so that’s one thing checked off my list!

I’ve got an Indoor Rowing race this weekend, then I can go back all-in on running for a few months! I love rowing, but I’ve really missed getting out for regular runs the last while.

Ran a lovely 10k in the woods yesterday and soaked in the sounds of the season since I left my headphones on the charger at home by accident. A good lesson in presence and gratitude for sure!

Ahh yes I actually prefer running without headphones. Especially in the woods, you hear all kinds of things (including relative silence)! The leaves are pretty loud this time of year, though, depending on where you are …

I’m in my hometown for Thanksgiving, and I met up with some of my high school friends for lunch.

It was terrible. Two of them brought a kid each, and they spent the entire time talking about themselves and their kids and gossiping about other people with whom we went to school.

I tried to ask open-ended questions about their lives and to contribute to the conversation, but I felt like every time, no one cared about what I had to say.

Overall, the exchange left me feeling drained and frustrated and sad that my friends don’t care about my life are anything beyond gossiping.

I just wanted to vent about it, so thanks for letting me do that.

Coming off the trot (where I crushed last year’s pace by 1:15/mi, nbd) for an easy 7 today. Christmas tree acquisition tonight, followed by drinks and decorations.

Tomorrow will be an easy few trail miles then the OSU/Mich game (go Bucks!). Helping a friend move to their new house in the afternoon.

Sunday long run (12ish?) then restocking the fridge/finishing cleaning the house from hosting Thanksgiving before it’s back to reality.

I just got 1st place in my age group for a 10k Turkey Trail Trot. It was my first trail race, 9 out of 44 total. 7 out of 23 male. My pace was 8:38. I’m really happy with my results. It was a hilly run too.

Working today, off for 7 after since in-law family is in town. My SIL has spent years adamantly stating we have nothing in common, which I disagree with but am not investing energy into it. But she asked if I wanted to run with her this weekend while they are here, so perhaps thats her olive branch. She’s much faster and into much shorter runs but we agreed on 4 easy miles tomorrow morning.

Bought a new Black Friday cellphone today. $999 phone, $830 trade in, I figured it wouldn’t get better than that.

Hoping for a big mileage week since I’m not working much. Also hoping for a big eating week since that’s my first love.

Ooh what phone did you get? And that’s so weird about your SIL, does she just arrive to every family function and ignore you since you “have nothing in common”? Hoping a run together only helps!

iPhone 15 pro max super duper platinum diamond. Pretty sure that’s the name.

She doesn’t ignore me per say, but my partners family is odd with poor communication. And I have a relatively screwed up view of family anyways since I’ve been solo since 16, raised 2 siblings, was adopted later, etc. so my BS tolerance is poor for it. It’s essentially mutual neutral. Pleasant in person, no communication otherwise.

If it makes you feel any better that’s how I feel about most of my extended family, they are all nice enough people and in person we get along, when not in person I forget they exist.

Lol all the phone names are ridiculous aren’t they. Congrats on the new one, though! I hope I don’t have to get one for a long time – I have the iPhone 13 mini and really don’t want to go back to a big phone.

I hear you. Family is weird. But maybe the magic of running will bring you a Thanksgiving bonding miracle.

I’ve been trying to up my weekly mileage again, and after Wednesday’s 10km run (and weights before) I hurt my lower back. It’s been an on/off problem since I was 18, and I thought it was going to kill me for the rest of the week, but it feels almost completely normal today!

I keep talking myself into/out of doing 10k again today, whether I should let it rest or go for a shorter run, but I guess we’ll see once I’m out there

Actually one of the best things I’ve found for it is running :) plus before a run there’s a few stretches I do specifically for it.

I ended up doing 6k and it was fine :) I think the problem was upping my mileage while also starting to squat with weights again. I think I need to have my mileage established before I do that

Ah that’s great you have some tips and tricks. Years ago I hurt my lower back so badly but running was fine and after a run I had more mobility, so I definitely hear you! But I’ve also hurt my back in a different way where running (or being very upright at all) was not an option 🫠

          Yay for getting out there!

Oh I hear you, when I trained for my first marathon, I missed a bunch of days/weeks because of ankle tendon issues. When I got those sorted, I was way behind on my training and over trained to the point of getting a disc bulge. It hurt so bad that I had to lay down immediately, in the driveway, but that didn’t stop the pain of course. My poor wife thought she was watching me have a heart attack despite being in my 30s.

But that was years ago and I’m fine now, and can also run much further! Lessons learned etc
