Tightly laced shoes are worse than loose. Make fists with your toes (like Die Hard) while tying them and then relax. Perfect amount of room every time.
Aren’t elastic laces bad for your feet or that’s just broscience?
As a triathlete, I’m told to use elastic laces only for a race and maybe a few workouts to see if you laced them right, but that’s it. I wouldn’t even use them for anything longer than 10k (Olympic distance), because what you gain in transition isn’t worth the risk/damage.
This is a great tip. I hurt myself a year or two ago and it was because I was tying my laces too tight. I guess I was always worried about them being loose and getting blisters or something. Will try the toe fist technique - thank you!
Even with lock laces this is true. Slightly loose = hammer toe and blister. Slightly tight = uncomfortable for 5 mins before the shoe flexes out to accommodate
I injured the ball of my right foot because the toe box was tied too tightly out of the box. Lesson learned: Completely loosen and re-snug the laces on any new pair of shoes.
Yes! I always tied my shoes tightly on training runs and ended up with foot cramps. I forgot to lace my shoes right before my last race and actually got no foot cramps, plus the best performance I’ve ever done!

Thanks for the tip. I’m going to try this on my next run.
Ditto.
I used to wiggle my toes up and down while tying my combat boots and running shoes for many years.
Flexing the toes “up and down” while tightening seems to simulate natural movement of the foot while standing still and tying off the laces.
All of my running shoes now have elastic laces these days, but the principle idea remains.

I like to put my foot up on my heel so my heel slides back into the shoe, then just tie the laces at a normal degree of tightness.
I’m going to try this on my next run
Look into Lock Laces. They’re a game changer, and are even better if you do multi-sport races; no need to tie your shoes!
I used to tie my shoes too tight, in high school and college, and got a neuroma lol Lesson learned
I swear I end up fixing my laces at least 3 times during a run. Definitely gotta try this
I’m going to try this on my next run. When I’ve healed.

Can confirm that having tightly laced shoes can cause muscle problems in your feet which leads to 2 months in pt 🫠

You had me at “like Die Hard”. Also thanks for the seasonal watch reminder.
I got great results when I switched to slip on running shoes
It’s been a while since I’ve watched Die Hard, do you mean curling up your toes?
I keep my shoes tied and slip them on and off like a heathen.
