So, I have made a few comments on reddit and X saying that bread is an anti nutrient and just digesting it takes nutrients out of your body. A quick Google search proves I am right. YET! Whenever I comment about this, I am downvoted or criticised. Why do you think this is? (Not on this sub just in general)

My current theory is that people just don’t like hearing that bread is bad for you, even though it is. Its like it makes them angry hearing it. Maybe because they don’t want to change their diet and resent others telling them it’s unhealthy. It’s just strange. What do guys think? Why does saying bread is an anti-nutrient trigger a nerve in most people?

    “Bread” is not one thing. You can make all sorts of bread out of all different ingredients, so people probably just don’t like blanket generalizations that don’t mean anything.

    “A quick Google search” can “prove” anything. It can probably “prove” that you sodomised a goose in high school. That doesn’t make it true.

    Read some philosophy books, psychology resources, learn about human bias, and you might find a good answer as to why people criticise you.

    I think there are a few issues with this, though. But to be fair, modern bread in the WEST is mostly trash. A majority of it is not prepared correctly, and this causes people great pain, especially when these same people have had their gut bacteria absolutely trashed by pesticides, antibiotics, antidepressants ibuprofens and the rest of the swill that people guzzle down. When you have a good gut, with a vast amount of bacteria that help you break down your food, you *can* handle bread etc. for the most part. But when you, like many of us, don’t have a good gut, your ability to handle complex foods, especially bread that isn’t prepared correctly, then you start to experience more consequences than the average person. Bread that has been fermented into a sourdough is ideal, and is how all bread used to be made at one point in time. But when the industrial revolution happened, and life began to move faster, we forgot WHY we took such great pains with bread, and other grains (like soaking and sprouting) and we stopped and people began to suffer. So much of the bread in France is properly prepared that people that struggle to eat bread here in America go to France and are able to tolerate the bread! The French also don’t allow an entire laundry list of environmental and food toxins (preservatives, pesticides etc.) and this is a hUGE help for digestion. Any way, I say all this to say, this problem is more complicated than “bread is terrible and no one should eat it.” Many people can and do eat it and sourdough bread actually has MANY benefits for the gut bacteria and there are plenty studies to support that.

    Its a hard pill to swallow but just because something isn’t good for you, doesn’t mean that it isn’t good for someone else. And i’m speaking to not only you, but myself and others as well. We musn’t become zealots. This issue is complicated and everyone has to do what’s best for them.

    It’s like walking into a bar and telling everyone why you don’t drink. They came there to drink and don’t want anyone making them feel guilty for doing it.

    You have to wait until someone says “you look like you feel great, what are you doing “ to tell them. Trying to help someone who doesn’t want help is a terrible social move.

    I feel you, OP. Quitting bread and gluten overall has been a game changer for me, and whenever I eat that shit again, I feel like crap.

    Nobody likes zealots. Especially when it comes to diet and nutrition because they’ll disregard pertinent info or scientific study because it doesn’t fit their narrative.

    My Google search says: Antinutrients are natural or synthetic compounds that interfere with the absorption of nutrients.

    So it says that it limits the absorption of new nutrients in your body, but it doesn’t take anything that’s already absorbed out. And doesn’t prevent all absorption.

    Maybe you are exaggerating the effect?

    I have a friend who is Ukrainian. She could never get used to the idea that I did not eat bread. She was always trying to offer me things she had baked. I had the same conversation about wheat with her many, many times. Then it finally occurred to me she’s from a place known as “The Bread Basket of the World.” Culturally, it is the norm to eat bread, especially for most of Europe. I was raised on it myself and it took me a while to give it up. So it’s not just that you’re saying bread is not nutritious, you’re attacking people’s culture and identity even though that’s not your intent. It also doesn’t help that it’s included in the food pyramid.

      I personally know lots of people who have to Europe with celiac and gluten sensitivities, and they eat the bread and pasta there with no problem. My mom has had problems with gluten her entire life and actually sources flour from Italy (you have to be careful cause some ship from Italy but are actually made in US) and she’s able to eat it with NO problem. US wheat is processed really horribly.

    I honestly didn’t know this. I really love bread, and probably have several servings through the day. I’m obese too. I’m not Paleo. I just joined this sub because I’m basically in most ‘diet’ subs to give me motivation to eat better. I did Paleo for a little while a long time ago, but couldn’t afford to keep it up, but that week or two was a time when I was cooking the most I’ve cooked and cooking pretty healthily.

    Bread is not an anti nutrient. It has anti nutrients.

    It depends on the context of your comments. If you’re just prosthletizing to people who didn’t ask your opinion, then yes, you’ll come off like a dick. Anti nutrients are pretty nuanced. Yes, they exist, and most people should probably limit their intake, but too many people think “plants are trying to kill you” because of the existence of these toxins. Everything has some kind of toxic load. The question is how much and how can we decrease them.

    Sugars suppress leptin. Leptin makes you feel full. The more things that turn to sugar you eat, the more you will eat.
