How’s your week of running going? Got any Complaints? Anything to add as a Confession? How about any Uncomplaints?
oops I bought a running watch. I’ve never had one before. Do I need one? probably not. did I want one yes.
Complaint : I’m frustrated because I’ve got a half marathon in a week and I’ve been ill for the last 10 days or so. I’ve put in 2-3 months of the best training I’ve ever done. I was feeling better and I went for a run which went fine, but the cough is lingering so I feel like I should be resting.
Confession : it’s my first half marathon so I probably should just take a bit of pressure off. I have no doubts about finishing because I’ve already run the distance in easy mode during training. It’s also the kind of race where there will be a prize for fancy dress. It’s for charity. Maybe I should just enjoy it.
Uncomplaint; ran a super nice effortless long run sunday of 16km
Confession: I keep running too hard on every session
Complaint: 8k at the same pace as sunday today felt absolutely horrible. Had a bad run…
Confession/ complaint carb loading sounds fun in theory… But in practice it kind of sucks around meal number 2 or 3 where you’re not hungry at all and feel over stuffed. I have to lecture for 3 hours on Wednesdays and had heartburn the whole time from being way too full. I’m sure this will help but I’m going to be happy if I don’t see another bagel or plate of pasta again until spring.
Uncompliant: I did set a 5k PR last week though, which feels like a good omen for Sundays race.
You shouldn’t be eating so much food to the point that you feel sick, you mostly just want to transition to eating a higher percentage of carbs in the days leading up to your race. Stuffing yourself to the point that you’re getting acid reflux will be counterproductive.
This is why liquid carbs are so great. You don’t feel so bloated but you get hooked up with the glycogen.
Complaint: I am planning my race dress rehearsal for tomorrow (only chance I’ll have to do it) and it’s going to be during the rainy part of the day. Womp womp.
Uncomplaint: I don’t have to run in the dark to get my run in before work!
Confession: No School November can go kick rocks. My kids have SIX days off from school this month. SIX. Their only days of school this week were yesterday and today, and because so many families skip school on a week like this (because why wouldn’t they?!) we’ve gotten a million robocalls from the school over the last month about how important it is for the kids to attend when there is school. I’m over it.
Complaint: Darkness at like 5pm is messing with my head. And it’s messing with the cats, they are all looking at me at 5pm and saying “yo dad, it’s dinner time, feed us!”
Uncomplaint: Trying to put together a workout plan, to do some leg/core strength exercises. I just need to find the time to actually do the workout. We put down a rubber floor in the basement, so I’ve got a nice place to do the workout. Just not enough time in the day…
Uncomplaint: My son has at least three soccer games this weekend, and they are early, so I’m probably going to miss both weekend runs. Which is not bad! My body still kind of hates me after the marathon, so I’m (mostly) fine taking some additional rest. Maybe I’ll try those leg/core workouts…
Our cat is losing his fuzzy little mind over the end of DST. It’s dark (5pm) and yet we don’t feed him for hours (7pm). Unfortunately for him, he expresses his displeasure by smooshing his head against my ankles, which is a cute behavior I want him to keep doing, so… he gets fed when the alarm goes off at 7.
Confession and complaint all in one, got Achilles tendonitis a little over a month ago, was giving it time to heal then decided to run yesterday, no hills a little 5 mile run in NYC, now I’m back on the injured list.
Complaint: I have the most vile blister on my left foot. It’s weeping and bleeding. From a half, in shoes I’ve worn for a half before. What gives?
Confession: I’m still running on it. Yes, it’s painful.
Uncomplaint: I have new shoes
Complaint: I hate not being able to run. Last year I tweaked my left knee and now when I run I get a shooting pain in my knee. Walking and cycling are fine, but running is painful. XRays showed thinning cartilage and arthritis from overuse.
Confession: I’m not doing anything about it. I should be working on leg strength (quads, calves, hamstrings) to help support the knee, in the hopes that I can get back to running.
Uncomplaint: Cycling is pretty fun, and I can re-purpose most of my running gear (tops, hats)
Uncomplaining: it snowed!
Complaint: the roads are a terrible mess I made it a quarter mile before turning around and heading home.
Complaint: this means I’ll have to take some unpaid time or work overtime next week.
Confession: part of me wants to just stay home all day today
Uncomplaint: I am loving the time change, since it means it’s no longer pitch black when I go out to run in the mornings.
Complaint: my asthma was flaring up pretty badly again yesterday. I was going through so much albuterol. Send help.
Uncomplaint: I’ve started brainstorming silly outfits for my next marathon. I am taking suggestions!
More uncomplaint: I am running a local half on Sunday that I’m pretty excited about. I have an 8-month-old PR that is just begging to be broken. As long as my lungs cooperate and don’t decide that my asthma is gonna be bad that day, it should be a good race!
Just wear a sign “I am here to talk about your car’s extended warranty”.
Well I’m glad someone is enjoying the time change because it’s not me.
Uncomplaint: I am loving the time change, since it means it’s no longer pitch black when I go out to run in the mornings
I too am looking forward to it not still being dark when I get home from my distance run tomorrow morning. Kinda jarring when you’ve been up for 4 hours and it’s still dark lol
confession: i’ve been loving doing my long runs with one sneaky hard hill in there somewhere lately. the last few weeks i’ve been sprinting up the lil hill in the middle of my long run and i love it! why am i a person that loves hills now?? im PRing all these hills that i usually dread. also, i am just getting back into running this year, and i feel like cady in mean girls when she was obsessed with regina. running is all i want to talk about now lol!
uncomplaint: i’ve had to work from home the past two weeks for personal reasons which means lunchtime runs! nothing better than knocking out some mileage on a lunch run, especially with daylight savings as part of the equation
complaint: why does time move so damn slow during tempo runs???
Uncomplaint - I’ve arrived back from my trip to New York to see that I am in a Kofuzi NYC marathon video
Confession - I wasn’t even running the race! I was pacing my GF through a tough part of the course (19-24) before dropping. But it was jarring to see Very Fast Professional Runners, YouTube/IG Famous Running Influencers, US, then the final finishers of the race
Complaint - I think I’m ready to sign up for a marathon again
How did your gf do? Do you mean she dropped, or you dropped from pacing?
Confession: I overtrained as a beginner by continuing to run after my long run was already at new record mileage. Planned increase was from 6 to 7 miles and my calf suddenly felt super tight somewhere between mile 8 & 9 because I got it in my head that 7 was “close enough” to ten miles.
Uncompliant: looks like my bicycling cross training gets to be the primary for the winter while I give my calf 6-8 weeks to recover. Thankfully, it was a minor overuse strain that I don’t feel unless I try to run more than 1 mile…
Complaint: I really really just want to run more distance, more often and in less time. My body doesn’t share the enthusiasm.
Story? pretty sure this doesn’t belong here, as it’s neither a complaint nor a confession.
took my two big doggos on an easy 5 yesterday. At one point, a little bull terrier runs out from someone’s yard to meet us at the street, and immediately starts going after my dogs. My dogs are much bigger than the other dog, and I immediately start thinking (1) i don’t want the other dog to get hurt; (2) i don’t want to catch a stray tooth; (3) i don’t really want to wind up at the vet.
The next few minutes were just an exercise in the bull terrier making a charge, getting his butt whipped, and me trying to drag my dogs off down the street, only to make it a few steps before repeating the process. I finally decided to just kick at this thing, since it clearly wasn’t being deterred from my pups, and I got him square under the jaw literally as his owner is walking out of the house to figure out what was going on. I honestly was surprised it didn’t knock the dog out, but that was pretty much the end of it.
I don’t really care all that much for my sake, but I’m annoyed about this whole thing because one of my dogs is already absolutely nuts when we go running, and this didn’t help at all. I hope the other doggo didn’t get too torn up, but I have no idea what I’m actually supposed to do in that situation.
Anyways, that’s the second run-in with loose dogs I’ve had in the last week- feel relatively fortunate that nothing bad has happened. Hoping for some more non-eventful runs here in the future, please.
