Any controversial/unpopular opinion that you may have in regards to running

My hot take is that Adidas shoes > Nike

People take it way too seriously. If you want a new pair of shoes, get them. If you see something cool on your run, stop to take a picture. You can have all the tech and gear or none of the tech and just basic stuff, the distance is still the same and you’re still running it the same — what matters is how YOU enjoy it.

Also this probably isn’t a hot take anymore, but all the running YouTubers need to go away. Like it’s not that difficult. Just go out and do it. And when whatever you’re doing gets a bit easier, then increase the distance or incline.

Running influencers can get in the bin. I follow some genuinely good people (BenisRunning and Philly Bowden) - both excellent runners both lovely people and entertaining. I like the simplicity they put to their content.

Influencers? The 7 things you must do to improve your running - you’ll never guess what number 4 is???!! Get in the bin

I’m still a bit of a novice, with only a few 5ks and my first half marathon next month, but every Saturday morning, on my long run, I run through the most gorgeous section of corn fields, leaves changing and sunrise around, I stop for pictures every time.

They’re helpful for beginners stretches and form checks. You’d be surprised how little the body remembers after years of not doing it.

I mostly watch them in order to connect with somebody, even parasocially, rather than to acquire information.

“Parasocially”…I really thought you said “parasitically”, but I guess they are kind of the same. Thank you for the new word.

I stopped tracking my runs. I was overly obsessed with how fast I was completing a certain route. It was increasing stress and decreasing enjoyment. I’m currently running without headphones and no tracking. Much better experience.

omg an anomaly 👀 I want to start running without headphones. I sense it takes away from the mental stamina to finish sometimes and i rely on music to hype me up or for tempo

It happened by accident. I forgot my headphones one day wondering how tf I was going to run. I went for a longer run that day because of how nice it was

I recommend starting with podcasts. I race without headphones for the most part but I listen to podcasts or audiobooks to train. Just feels like you’re listening to friends chatter about something, which simulates a lot of what you’re going to hear on a race day.

      First point 100%

Running YouTubers though, I think they have their place. Nick Symmonds makes Mr. Beast-like videos where he gives away cash for running/fitness challenges and I find the videos mostly irritating influencer slop. BUT, that channel is what got my boys excited about running. Even now that they’ve lost interest in those videos, they still love to run.

This is totally anecdotal, but where running was once just a neat thing they did with Dad sometimes, it’s now both their chosen sport. An influencer deserves some of the credit for that and that’s cool with me.

I stop to take pictures, or stop to talk to random animals, or take detours to see something that might be pretty, or randomly do a little dance when a good song hits during the runner’s high, during my runs all the time. Life is too short to be serious or care what anyone else thinks.

When I was first getting started with running I was complaining to a runner friend of mine about not wanting to go, or trying to schedule a run and then having something come up. He was so perplexed, and told me to “just go” when j felt like it. Life changing. Every time I don’t want to run now I just tell myself to just go and see how I feel after a minute. Always works
