It’s Monday, fam, you know what that means.

Time for chit chat! How was the weekend, what’s on for the week, tell us all about it.

Weekend was super busy but lots of fun. Hung out w/the girlfriend Friday night and tried to help the kid w/the homework. Not sure if we made any big progress but maybe we did? I have zero experience having heart to heart talks with 9 yr old girls and I am learning that parenting is super tough. Why did no one tell me this? Saturday the girlfriend and I went on a very romantic date that was a lot of fun and Sunday we managed to have a little tiff and the evening did not go as well as either of us would’ve wanted it to. Such is life sometimes I guess. I did manage to get a nice, slow 9 mile run in the middle of all of that.

This week is race week. I have the 10 mile Turkey Trot on Saturday. I am going to be taking it easy training wise and trying to taper and not to freak out. I have no idea what to set for goals. The long runs have been fine on my legs but the stomach has not cooperated and the weather change has left my allergies with me unable to breathe. Weather is supposed to be 50 for a low and 70 for a high so the weather will be nice at least. Currently the only “injury” I’ve picked up is some PF so we’re working on the calves this week.

Finally made it to 10k…a little over, 6.52 miles. At that point felt like I could have easily made it to 7 but would have been late for my hair appointment. Poor stylist had to deal with my sweaty head.

I run through rural orchards/back roads, yesterday this jackass swerved into me and I had to bail into the bushes or else I would have gotten hit. I tossed my water bottle at his driverside window and cracked the glass and he just sped off, but didn’t think to get his license plate. I’m still shook a few days later tbh. I run these back roads specially because there is such little traffic.

Weekend was goodddd, gym sesh on saturday, went to get greek food and binged Netflix with the fam all evening. Sunday was a 2.5h longrun which went really really well. Was waiting for that leg pain to hit me like a rock but it never happended. Ordered some sushi and had an old fashioned gaming sesh with a friend, haven’t done that in years so really enjoyed that. Next week is peak week. 4 sessions including a 3h long run. After that we taper for 3 weeks leading up to my first marathon in Málaga! Hope everyone had a great weekend aswell!

Sounds like a great time and bonus that you didn’t get sore after your long run! Anything good on Netflix? Last night I started All the Light We Cannot See but I’ve also been alternating Arrested Development reruns and this season’s Bake Off.

Sounds good, there’s something truly comforting about rerunning a good show you love. Currently watching Entrevías, Spanish shows are a huge hit currently, atleast in Europe. It’s a nice show, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it.

I hit my first 70km week a few weeks ago. Really considering trying for a 100km next week / maybe starting Wednesday… big stretch for me but the idea is like a virus in my mind lol

Dang get it! I hear you on the numbers fixation, my only caution would be to build up responsibly so you don’t get injured :) Good luck!

Ran my first half yesterday. Finished faster than expected which was awesome! Great course and so much fun!! Now to recover. Planning to hit some easy minutes on the peloton and maybe get a few easy miles in later this week.

      Congrats!!

I went to spinning two days after my 1/2 last month, and felt it really helped to shake out the legs. Also try pedaling backwards if you don’t…like in the warmup, feels good.

Got some bad news. My mom needs back surgery ☹️. Am very disheartened and worried. I know it will alleviate the pain she is in, wish she did not have to go through this. Waiting to find out the date. Am getting ready for my nightly run, helps with the stress of it all. I hope everyone has a good week!

I immensely enjoyed my long weekend. I ran a half yesterday before going into my next marathon training cycle. I’ve been fighting asthma for nearly 3 months, so I had very low expectations–my main goal was “don’t die of an asthma attack.” I proceeded to run a 1:48:27, which is a 4-and-a-half minute PR. Now my legs hurt.

I finally told my grandpa that my husband and I were going to get a hotel during our Thanksgiving visit. I got one text about it several hours later saying “We are disappointed you won’t be staying with us. Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday” which I’m 75% sure his wife told him to send. This feels like exactly the kind of thing that she would be offended by and he would not. Ah well.

I’ve been reading the Wilkie Collins book “The Dead Secret” and it is fabulous. I got very excited when I found this novel in my local bookstore a couple of weeks ago because I had never even heard of this one despite how much I love Wilkie Collins. I’m hoping to finish it today.

Woohoo amazing job with a new PR!! How did the asthma feel during the race?

And I couldn’t help but chuckle about the text from your grandfather. I think if it comes up again, you could say the truth about the doorless bathroom thing in a humorous kind of way and all have a laugh about it. It is really weird. I had a room like that growing up, where my bathroom was just the corner of my bedroom, and it was so strange. I didn’t really like it then, and it was just me in there!

Did 5K at a local trail where a bit over a month ago I “hurt” my ankle. (It wasn’t the trails fault, just a cumulation of everything together). Happy to report that my ankle is A OK today. Still continuing my PT, the work to build it up strong and healthy will take far more than a month but I’m glad that overall my body is responding well and allowing me to run. Now it’s the hard part of actually staying consistent with running as we enter midwest winter.

I started running last September (in Montana). I, too, didn’t know if I would be able to carry through the winter. I invested in some layers, a headlamp, and a pair of Gortex trail shoes for the snow and ice. I found I loved cold morning runs in the dark with few people around. It was a bit difficult at first, but I forced myself into the routine, and now I feel I can accomplish more than I ever expected.

Ran my second half yesterday in Monterey, CA! My half marathon pace felt pretty aggressive in the beginning and I didn’t feel great at miles 2-5 so toned back. The fatigue also felt strong in the middle of the race. Here are my splits with HR data.

Any tips on getting more comfortable running faster for longer periods of time? guessing more tempo work outs? My training was decently unstructured. Just incorporating 2-3 easy runs, 1 track workout with usually 800s, and one longer run per week with some biking sprinkled in. I’m hoping to run a marathon next fall with maybe one more in the spring to get ready. Any thoughts/feedback appreciate. I’m a 30 y/o male with mostly cycling experience, v02 max of 51 according to my Garmin.

My leg is still not okay from an injury from many weeks ago. I’ve been religious with physio and was really hoping to be more improved by now. Much frustration.

I’ve kept my jogs no longer than 5-6 km and slow, and mostly have no actual pain during the runs (just afterwards and when trying to get back to any other exercise with the leg), but I’ve noticed my knees try to collapse on me now! I don’t think this has been a problem before, as it’s been an odd feeling to suddenly have my knees touch while running?! Now I’m a bit nervous to do even the short jogs, in case a rubbish form will cause other problems. Thankfully I’m going back to the physio this week.

Having said all that. We have a very windy autumn day here, with wet leaves blowing everywhere, gusts that try to knock you over, and branches and broken umbrellas littering the streets. I felt weirdly alive out in the stormy darkness, like it was the best weather ever to run slowly struggle forward in to start my day!

Think I (28m Aus) can call myself an official runner — was in Sydney for a wedding over the weekend, and brought my runners, clothes, belt etc so I could do some runs while I was there haha. Got two in — morning of the wedding, and morning after!

Sydney is noticeably more humid than Melbourne though, so even though it was only 22C when I was running at 8am, the sun and humidity combo was a killer.

For a while I’ve been like “damn I wish I had the confidence to run shirtless”. With the humidity there, and the fact I wouldn’t see people running there again in my life, I got the confidence to take my shirt off both days which felt so good! On the Sunday I took my singlet off 1km in so kinda regret leaving my friends place in one, but also I was coated in sweat when I finished so actually not sure if the singlet would’ve helped. But I felt good without one, felt cool, felt happy, that’s a win.

Now I’m back home in Melbourne but I’m keen to get the rig out when it starts warming up here a bit more too!

Nice little personal journey for me. Sorry for the long post!

I ran my first ever cross country race yesterday and it was amazing!

Five 1km loops around a course in the wind and pouring rain, temperature was 5 degrees. Every lap I was changing my lines trying to find a bit of hard-ish ground so my feet wouldn’t sink into the mud. Ended up finishing in a time of 20:21, which is almost 2 minutes off my 5k PB but I feel like I had to work harder for this.

Overslept for my morning run. Trying to keep vibes positive and not let it ruin the rest of my week! I already had to make some major modifications to my usual workout schedule because I have a crazy work week ahead, and it’s tempting to jump ship and resume next week…but I will not do that!!! Training for my very first race - a half - next June. I am finding it surprisingly difficult to run distances longer than 3 miles, because then I have to drop my pace down to 11-12 min mile. I like to think of myself as a relatively fit person and it bothers me that I’m such a slow runner right now. Trying to find the beauty in being a beginner.

Most people go through this realization as they start upping their distance that they are running to fast and need to slow down to put in more miles, don’t worry about it 11-12 us not that slow of a pace especially for someone training for their first half, I have done 4 half’s, 2 fulls and a 50k and my regular pace is still mostly 10-11 mins/mile.
