I have an 8-mile run scheduled for Saturday. This isn’t the longest run ever heard of, but it’s the longest for me in probably 10-15 years. The bigger part is really this is gonna be the first run much over an hour (have run a couple 7-7.5 mile runs, ended up being slightly over an hour, but not substantially) so I am actually gonna dip my toes in the water as far as water/food during the run. I could probably make it alright without, more wanting to see how my stomach agrees with some food. This is the first time at any distance I have even though about nutrition during a run. We shall see how it goes.

Experimenting with running fuel can be an adventure. What type of fuel are you going to start with? I hope it goes well!

Not a clue lol. Honestly probably gonna grab some small, individual packaged thing of candy (just because we have some left over from Halloween). Probably not “the best” choice, but it’s easy enough shove in my pocket with minimal mess, and it has some simple sugar/not a ton of fat or protein. I will worry about getting something more purposeful after I find out I’m not just gonna puke everything 2 minutes after eating it lol.

Candy is legit! I have a hard time with gels and tend to do candy and bits of real food. For candy, I highly recommend sour gummy worms and Swedish fish :p But really any simple sugar will help!

No Swedish fish lol, but I did have some random Skittles and one last thing of gummy snacks lol.

First point I noticed: I have had a deviated septum for I don’t even know how long, never really cared about it. It became WAY more evident as I was attempting to mouth breath like a champ and eat candy simultaneously lol. Probably good that no one was recording this debacle lol.

Second point: I am sure it would be more evident during significantly longer runs. I didn’t have any sort of stomach issues, but also didn’t notice any real “energy” from eating some sugar. Are the first little pack of Skittles around 40 minutes, the gummy snacks at about 1:00 (purposely slowed down a bit around mile 4-5 so I would even have some time after the second snack). I dunno, I didn’t notice it “helped”, but I think it’s also fairly short/slow to really “need” any sort of food during the run. But happy to find I didn’t have any major stomach/gut issues after eating something. Maybe I will look at more “performance”/grown up options as opposed to random candy next time lol.

First time posting in one of these. Lost 50 lbs this year. In the best shape of my life at 32. Decided to start training for a half marathon a couple months ago and have been ramping up the miles slowly. My brother has been running marathons for a few years now and we’ve got our first run together planned for Sunday. It’s probably against all sorts of advice on training but we’re going for 13 miles. I’ve finished all my runs so far and felt like I could keep going. I want to see what I’m capable of. Either it’s a reality check in continuing my current training plan or I can revise my finishing goal for my first half next May. Either way I’m doing it and nervously excited about it.

That sounds exciting! How nice to be able to share some miles with your brother. Sounds like you’ve made amazing progress. When is your race?

Kind of funny, I usually don’t like running but yesterday I was bored and feeling motivated so I decided to go on a light run to pass the time. Ended up finishing 5kms and felt quite good so kept going to 10. Still felt relatively good and had to get home somehow so I kept going until 12, when I realised a half-marathon was only 9kms away, so I said fuck it. Ended up doing the half-mara and completing by far my longest ever run. My legs do feel like jelly today though

Weather permitting, Sunday I will run my first 10k. Not a race, just solo, but it would be the furthest I’ve ever run. Nervous and excited.

I have 6 miles on the schedule for tomorrow. I haven’t run that far in over a year so while I know without a doubt it’s doable, I’m still anxious about it.

Was supposed to get in 5.5 miles today in preparation for the 10k next Saturday. Well, less than a mile in I started feeling pain around my Achilles. Stopped to walk a bit and then felt it move up behind my knee with ever step. So, a walk back to my car and now I’m home with some ice. Thankfully, I have done 5 miles so far so I should be good next weekend. It is a race I’ve done before so I know the route and know it won’t be crazy slants like my last race.

Oh no, that sounds terrible! Did the ice help? Sounds crazy for the pain to be going up your leg like that.

I have a nighttime race (5K) on Saturday, so no long run that morning. I plan on getting some easy miles in though.

If the weather cooperates I plan on doing a long trail run Sunday morning (18ish miles). Current forecast is dry, but freaking cold (34F). I have a trail race in February I would like to do (5-hour 4.3 mile loop challenge race), so I need to get some trail miles in. Kind of difficult when sunrise is at 7am. No trail running in the dark!

Race weekend! Going to try and take it easy tomorrow and rest up for Sunday. Weather is looking pretty good (cloudy, 47 F at the start, 52 F around the time I plan to be done, 7 mph crosswind). The few miles I’ve done at MP seem reasonable and power for those miles line up with marathon target for my CP according to Stryd. All that’s left is to obsess over little details until Sunday morning.

I got one more full 5k run before my race in Thanksgiving. For the first time in my life (at 43) I actually have a little confidence in my running. My goal has been steadily being shifted… now down to 27:30. Running under a 9 minute mile just seems so foreign to me lol.

It’s a week until MARATHON TIME for me! Did 13 ks today and I’m done with the training plan! I really wonder how this one will turn out. It will be my 3rd. I’ve done two just under 4 hours. What’s worrying me now is that running has been mega hard the last couple of weeks. I haven’t enjoyed it one bit. Is this normal?

I’ve done Hal Higdon’s novice 2, so not crazy mileage. This is the plan that’s previously successfully taken me to two sub 4s, so it should be ok…

I have done every single long run and almost all of the midweek runs. (A handful of times over the last 16 weeks life has just gotten in the way, but I have given it my best!)

I feel slow, heavy and tired. My husband says I was like this the last two times too, but I honestly can’t remember…

Any helpful and encouraging words are appreciated! I hope at least I’ll be able to see the finish line. Surely I will be able to jog my way through after all this training…

Run a 5k today like I do a few times a week. It was rainy but not too bad!

Got a turkey trot 5k on Sunday following by a 15k on Monday (training for a challenge run in January).

We have holiday photos tomorrow, I think. It’s at a tree farm and it’s supposed to rain 😂. Maybe it’s just me being crushed under the mental load of it all but I don’t actually care. I organized the shoot, I scheduled the time, I picked out our outfits, I fixed my son’s sweater so he can wear it again … I’ve done all I can to make it happen. If Christmas photos this year are of us huddled under an umbrella oh well. All I can do is my best 🤷‍♀️

Running wise I’ll probably run my usual 25 minutes. It’s so tempting to increase but i already added a second run to pt (I go 2x a week now and ran there and back both times) and I’m not eager to aggravate the PTT any.

I might bake actually. I’ve been cultivating a sour starter and I’m not suuuper sure it’s doing the thing? It bubbles a lot but doesn’t rise. I can’t remember if it should rise or not. I promised sour dough for thanksgiving so I’ll try a loaf out this weekend and see how it does. If not I’ll probably do brioche since that relies on manufactured yeast and is more predictable. 🤷‍♀️

Mine definitely rises, rising up to 2-3x its unrisen height. I keep a tiny one and refresh it daily (8g starter, 30g water, 30g flour), so I don’t know how they really work when you’re not discarding most of it each time you feed it.

I am right there with you in the “it is what it is” boat! You’ve done all you can for the photos, they’ll be what they are! But hopefully they’re great :)

I had a sourdough starter a few years ago and I do think it rose a bit, but slowly over time as it was fed. Mostly lots of bubbles. Wishing you a successful bread bake! Bread is definitely not my forte.

I’m three months into running and everything is going really well! However, yesterday I sprained my ankle. I’m demoralized thinking about the few weeks/month off that are ahead. Google seems to say fitness drops off pretty quick :/ How do y’all deal with injuries? Had my first 10 mile run planned this Sunday, so bummed I can’t do it

Uuuugh ankle sprains are the worst. They are sooo stubborn to heal. I would definitely recommend getting checked out by a doc because there’s a chance something could be broken/chipped or torn. It is so disappointing to get injured but the best thing you can do for your running is take recovery seriously (easier said than done lol!). My condolences :(
